The imbalance in progress

It won’t be news to anyone when I point out that technology is advancing as never seen before.  As a species, we are progressing in so many areas. Along with our technological progress, we have a far better understanding of the physical world. However, when it comes to the human experience we have a psychological problem, not a technological one.

When German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche declared, “God is dead!” he was referring to the decline of religious faith following the Enlightenment, which prioritized science and reason over belief. As a young man, I viewed organized religion negatively, convinced the world would be better without it. Now, with age and experience, I’ve come to appreciate the wisdom in diverse spiritual traditions and ancient philosophies. I also better understand Nietzsche’s concerns.

What has replaced the religious beliefs that once formed the foundation of so many cultures? What core values guide our societies today? While religion has undoubtedly caused conflicts, what have we substituted in its place? Science and technology offer incredible advancements, but they do not help us navigate grief, depression, or despair. Logic alone cannot soothe emotional pain. To truly progress, we must also develop psychologically, emotionally, and spiritually.

I am encouraged that there are schools which are teaching mindfulness and meditation to children.  Companies have begun supporting mental health initiatives and more people are becoming aware of the psychological needs. However, the pace of change continues to overwhelm many of us and far too many people try to medicate the symptoms rather than addressing the cause of their emotional discomfort.

To align our emotional development with technological progress, we must shift our focus inward. Perhaps the best starting point is the ancient Greek maxim inscribed at the Temple of Apollo in Delphi: “Know thyself.” Self-awareness is the foundation of personal growth. This can be cultivated through meditation, self-reflection, and guidance from a mentor, therapist, or spiritual counselor. The beliefs that emerge from this process can serve as a personal philosophy to navigate life’s complexities.

If we learn to balance our pursuit of knowledge with a quest for wisdom, we can bridge the gap between psychological and technological progress. This balance will empower us to make better decisions, enrich our lives, and, ultimately, find authentic happiness.
